Johannesburg Water launched the newly constructed Lenasia reservoir

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Mpho Phalatse, accompanied by MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Cllr Michael Sun, the chairperson of the JW board of directors, Ms Rachel Kalidass and the Managing Director Ntshavheni Mukwevho launched the newly constructed Lenasia High Level Reservoir today, the 30th June 2022.

The new 15 ML Lenasia High Level Reservoir was constructed to augment the existing 6ML Lenasia High Level Reservoir, which had insufficient capacity to supply the area dependant on it. Nyeleti Consulting (Pty) Ltd was appointed for the provision of professional civil and structural services.

The existing rising main had a diameter of approximately 400 mm and was extremely old. The rubber-sealed couplings with which the pipe was joined had aged and deteriorated. The rising main was insufficiently sized to supply Lenasia High Level Reservoir, thus had to be increased.

The project is aimed at improving the storage capacity of the Lenasia High Level Reservoir, to improve the reliability of and duration in which the reservoir can be supplied with water. These will thus improve the supply to allow safe overflowing and scouring of the existing reservoir as well as the proposed new high-level reservoir. Furthermore, the improved supply will allow safe overflowing and scouring of the Lenasia Hospital Hill Reservoir.

The following areas will be supplied by the new reservoir:
• Lenasia South Ext 1
• Lenasia South Ext 4
• Mogson Manor
• Zakaria Park
• Vlakfontein
• Finetown
• Hospital Hill; and
• Lehae.
