WATER QUALITY REPORT FOR GREATER JOHANNESBURG WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM- 2016
22 March 2018
Johannesburg Water SOC Ltd, a municipal – owned entity of the City of Johannesburg, is mandated to supply water to approximately 4.4 million residents within the jurisdiction of Johannesburg. On a monthly and annual basis , the company releases its water quality report.
JW supplies 1 515 Ml/day of potable drinking water, procured from the bulk supplier, through a distribution network of 12 066 km, 122 reservoirs and water towers and 37 water pump stations. The water supplied by Johannesburg Water must meet the requirements of the South African National Standard for Drinking Water, SANS 241-1: 2015 Edition 2 and to do that, an extensive monitoring programme is followed to ensure compliance.
This programme entails the analysis of at least 500 water samples every month, covering all reservoir zones, tower zones and informal settlements. During the 12-month period from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2016, 6820 samples were analysed and 91564 tests were undertaken. Escherichia coli (E. coli) is the most important indicator of the microbiology quality of drinking water and SANS 241 requires at least 99% of samples to be free of E. coli.
During the review period, 99.8% of the samples were free of E. coli. Turbidity measures the clarity of the water and according to SANS 241. 95% of the samples must be less than 1 Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU). During the review period, the turbidity in 99.5% of the samples was less than 1 Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU).
Johannesburg Water is a proud holder of the blue drop status certification by the Department of Water and Sanitation and is committed to provide quality water to all residents of the City of Johannesburg.
