Pipe Replacement Programme
Providing a Sustainable Water and Sanitation Supply to All Residents
Johannesburg Water is committed to ensuring a reliable, efficient, and sustainable water and sanitation service for all residents across the City.
As part of this commitment, the entity continues to implement a long-term infrastructure renewal programme focused on replacing ageing water and sewer networks. This programme plays a critical role in reducing pipe bursts, sewer blockages, and water losses, while improving the overall performance of the system.
To achieve a sustainable renewal rate, Johannesburg Water is working towards replacing critical infrastructure annually, with a targeted investment in both water and sewer networks. While progress has been made in recent years, the scale of infrastructure renewal required remains significant.
Over the next five years, Johannesburg Water plans to:
- Replace 428 km of water pipelines
- Replace 286 km of sewer pipelines
This work will prioritise infrastructure that has reached the end of its useful lifespan, ensuring proactive maintenance rather than reactive repairs.
Through this programme, Johannesburg Water aims to:
- Reduce water losses and non-revenue water
- Minimise sewer blockages and pipe bursts
- Improve system reliability and service delivery
- Strengthen long-term water security for the City
Water remains a scarce and valuable resource. Johannesburg Water continues to encourage all residents to use water responsibly and to comply with current water restrictions, as we collectively protect our future.
