The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Geoffrey Makhubo, today, 28 March 2020, visited several areas with the City in an effort to monitor public compliance with the lockdown and related regulations.
The visits are also intended to monitor the service delivery interventions that are being made by the City to intensify waste removal, provide water supply, sanitation services and awareness on the coronavirus and lockdown pronounced by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
“We are pleased that a majority of citizens have heeded the call and are in compliance with the regulations that relate to the lockdown. However, in highly dense areas such as Denver, George Goch and Jeppe hostels which we visited today, there is a need to intensify awareness on the lockdown and to enforce the laws as they relate to the sale of liquor and spaza-shops” said Mayor Makhubo.
In all three hostels, the Mayor and his delegation found residents converged in groups of more than 100 with complete disregard of social-distancing.
“We have managed to engage with izinduna at the hostels, who have agreed to cooperate and collaborate with government in creating awareness and enforcing compliance. Several of the gatherings were dispersed upon conclusion of our engagements and we are pleased with the understanding and cooperation of izinduna” said Mayor Makhubo.
The City of Johannesburg, working with the provincial and national spheres of government, will continue to enforce compliance, engage communities where there is non-compliance and assist our people to be safe and protected.
The City has over the last three days run an extensive drive to clean and sanitize taxi ranks and our bus stops in an effort to protect residents and our spaces.
