Collapsed sewer pipe in Noordwyk

Collapsed sewer pipe in Noordwyk

15 February 2021
Media Statement
Collapsed sewer pipe in Noordwyk

Residents of Noordwyk, Country View and Blue Valley are advised that Johannesburg Water is aware of the sewer flowing into the stream as a result of a pipe that has collapsed. This matter  is receiving seriously care by the Entity and  has been reported to the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development as well as the national Department of Water and Sanitation.

The collapsed DN450 sewer pipeline runs in the centre of a watercourse across fourteenth street in Noordwyk. We have engaged all relevant stakeholders via the Johannesburg Water (JW) internal Environmental Department for necessary directives which will enable a contractor to work in the watercourse.

The type of work is extremely complicated and will require diversion of the watercourse to enact necessary repairs, relay, align and anchor sections of the collapsed pipeline.

Due to the watercourse diversion, GDARD requested that further directives will be required from national Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS).

Johannesburg Water is also busy with the process of contractor procurement who will carry out the necessary repairs. There is currently no estimated time of resolution, as we await directives from both GDARD and DWS and will try to complete repairs speedily in order to minimize impact on the environment and the ecosystem. All repairs updates will be communicated on the Company social media pages.
