Rand Water Meredale and Waterval reservoirs critically low

After the unsuccessful G23/Q2 Shutdown that was carried out over the weekend, Rand Water recommissioned its infrastructure in order to restore water supply. During the recommissioning process, an Air Valve on the Q2 pipeline failed and caused a major water leak in Naturena that required to be repaired.

The Rand Water Eikenhof Pump station required to be decommissioned in order to repair the faulty air valve. This repair work has now been completed and the recommissioning process has begun.

As a result, the Meredale and Waterval reservoirs are now at critically low levels. This will affect supply to some of our reservoirs and towers.

Eikenhof is now pumping at maximum flow, however we have not started seeing an improvement in our system.

Rand Water Shutdown

Rand Water Shutdown

Media Statement
Rand Water shutdown

The Rand Water shutdown which was meant to replace the 800mm main valve and bypass valve on the cross connection of the G23 and Q2 pipelines was not successful. This is due to the faulty main isolating valve at the Eikenhof pump station that could not seal properly in order for the valves to be replaced.

Rand Water was able to complete repairs and started pumping water yesterday afternoon. Currently most of the Johannesburg Water reservoirs that were affected have recovered. Florida tower, Waterval Tower and Constantia tower are still empty but we anticipate that water will start getting restored to the affected areas throughout the day as the system recovers.

Please note that the tanks placed over the weekend are still onsite and  have been refilled.

We appeal to all to use water sparingly and to remind them that level one water restrictions are still in place. Watering of gardens is not allowed between 6 am and 6 pm in summer months (1 Sept to 31 March) and furthermore, it is not allowed to wash paved areas and driveway using hosepipes.
