Update: Johannesburg Water systems impacted by poor supply and high demand

The following Johannesburg Water reservoirs and towers are still struggling with capacity due to poor supply and high water demand. Customers are requested to reduce consumption.

Linden 1 reservoir and tower
Remains stable and normal, while the tower recovered overnight but consumption is high and will affect capacity.

South Hills tower
Water levels are low but recovering and supplying normally. Residents in this supply zone may still be experiencing low pressure as the system is still recovering. Supply has improved significantly but demand is high and customers in low-lying areas are requested to reduce consumption to allow recovery.

Commando System
• Crosby reservoir: Remains critically low but is supplying normally.
• Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs: Critically low due to high demand and slow recovery. Low pressure to no water is expected in higher lying areas. Customers in low-lying areas are requested to reduce consumption to allow for recovery.
• Brixton reservoir and tower: The reservoir remains critically low due to high demand and reduced supply from the Crosby reservoir. The outlet is 50% open to allow recovery of the system. Customers in this supply zone should expect low water pressure. The Brixton tower is also critically low but is supplying normally. Pumping is at half the capacity due to the low levels at the Brixton reservoir. Recovery is slow and customers are requested to reduce consumption to assist in recovery.

Eagles Nest reservoir
Remains critically low due to poor supply and high demand. Customers in this supply zone should expect low water pressure.

Doornkop reservoir
The reservoir is critically low, and recovery is slow due to poor supply and high demand. Low pressure expected and customers are requested to reduce consumption to allow recovery.

Alternative water supply is still being provided through 13 roaming trucks deployed at various key points in the supply zones of the struggling systems. Johannesburg Water is monitoring the systems and will provide more information.

Some Johannesburg Water systems affected by poor supply from Rand Water

Some Johannesburg Water reservoirs and towers have critically low water levels due to poor supply pressure (low or no supply) from Rand Water. Johannesburg Water is closely monitoring the systems and will provide an update when the systems recover.

South Hills tower update
The South Hills tower is not receiving any supply from Rand Water. Customers in the supply zone will be impacted by no water.

Crosby, Hursthill 1, and Hursthill 2 reservoirs
All three systems are critically low due to poor supply pressure. Residents in these reservoir zones will be impacted by low pressure to no water.

Brixton and Eagles Nest
Both these systems have critically low water levels due to poor supply pressure. Residents in these supply zones will be impacted by low pressure to no water.

Doornkop West reservoir
Critically low water levels but is supplying normally.

Johannesburg Water is providing alternative water supply to all areas affected.

Johannesburg Water systems impacted by power dip at Rand Water Zuikerbosch Treatment Plant

Johannesburg Water systems impacted by power dip at Rand Water Zuikerbosch Treatment Plant

Johannesburg Water systems have been affected by a power failure that occurred at Rand Water Zuikerbosch Treatment Plant on Thursday 24 August. This affected the bulk water supplier’s total pumping system.

This has resulted in the depletion of the Zwartkopjes, Eikenhof and Palmiet systems, which feed all Johannesburg Water systems. While most of the entity’s reservoirs are stable, areas fed by the South Hills tower and the Eagles Nest reservoir will be impacted by low pressure to no water.

Pumping has been restarted; however, some are experiencing low pressure. Rand Water is working with Eskom technicians who are currently working on restoring the plant.

There is no estimated time for completion.

Alexander Park reservoir update

19 August 2023 – 10:30

Customer Notice

Alexander Park reservoir update

Alexander Park reservoir was put on bypass mode recently as a dummy run. This was in preparation for the cleaning of the reservoir, which is scheduled to take place on 28 August 2023.

This resulted in low pressure to no water for residents across various suburbs, including Kensington, Bruma, Cyrildene, and Malvern.

However, the reservoir has since been taken off bypass mode and residents should start getting steady water supply again during the course of the day. Residents in higher lying areas will experience low pressure.

Johannesburg Water apologises to customers for the inconvenience caused.

Update: Craigavon water outage

Update: Craigavon water outage

Johannesburg Water teams experienced technical challenges while conducting repairs on the water pipeline. As a result, Craigavon residents are still without supply as the water remains isolated.

Technical teams are working around the clock to complete repairs on the water pipeline.

On Wednesday, 16 August, water was isolated in Craigavon to allow the technical teams to conduct investigations into the reason for the area outage. This followed the planned maintenance which took place on 15 August and affected Witkoppen, Craigavon, and parts of Kengies.

When the water pipeline in the area was opened after the maintenance work, it was found that Craigavon residents were still without water.
Johannesburg Water is providing alternative water supply for residents, prioratising critical customers such as hospitals and schools. The water tankers at Life Fourways Hospital and Crawford Preparatory School have been filled by the entity. Three water tankers are roaming the area.

Tankers have been placed at the following locations:
1. 1x tanker in the open field across from Fernbrook Estate for the lower parts of Craigavon
2. 1x tanker at MacBeth Avenue near Tezula Lifestyle Estate, Fourways

Further updates will be provided to customers.
