Vandalism leads to water supply challenges in Lenasia south
Johannesburg Water is aware of the water supply interruption currently affecting Lenasia south and surrounding areas.
This is due to a main water pipeline that was vandalised in Narens Farm informal settlement on Wednesday morning, 1 November. As such, Johannesburg Water had to implement an emergency water shutdown to conduct repairs.
Water supply to Johannesburg Water systems had to be isolated (closed) which affected the Hospital Hill, Lenasia High Level, and Cosmos reservoir supply zones.
Areas affected by Hospital Hill and Lenasia High level reservoirs will have no water supply tonight. Supply is expected to resume by Thursday morning, 2 November. Customers supplied by Cosmos reservoir will not be affected.

Sandton systems
Most reservoirs retained stability throughout the day and are supplying normally. The Illovo reservoir has been reconfigured to boost supply, and the outlet is opened at 50% to retain capacity. Johannesburg Water continues to monitor the Sandton systems, including the direct feeds.
Midrand Systems
Rabie Ridge reservoir and tower
The reservoir maintained stability during the day due to throttling done at night, however, the level remains low. Both tower and reservoir outlets are opened at 30% to retain capacity. The tower is supplying the area through bypass mode. Both supply zones may experience poor pressure.
Diepsloot reservoir
Water levels remained stable throughout the day because of the throttling done at night. The outlet will be opened at 50% today to retain capacity. The supply zone may experience low pressure.
Linden 1 reservoir and tower
The reservoir remained stable throughout the day and is supplying normally. The tower was supplying normally throughout the day, however, due to high demand and poor supply pressure during the day, the tower is now empty. Johannesburg Water will monitor the system and the tower is expected to improve overnight.
Waterval and Quellerina towers
Both towers are empty due to current power outage in the area. Pumping will resume as soon as power is restored. Both supply zones will have no water.
South Hills tower
The tower’s pumping has stopped due to the unstable incoming supply. Regular pumping will only resume once incoming improves. The tower is currently supplying through bypass mode. Low pressure to no water is expected.
Alexander Park reservoir
The reservoir is supplying normally and will be throttled overnight to build capacity.
Berea reservoir
Supplying normally after water levels improved overnight due to the mitigation strategy of throttling. Continued to be stable throughout the day and is supplying normally.
Yeoville pump station
Pumping resumed today after power was restored in central Johannesburg. The pump station is supplying normally.
Eagles Nest reservoir
Levels improved overnight and maintained stability throughout the day. Reservoir is supplying normally.
Commando System
• Brixton reservoir: Remains critically low due to poor supply. It is currently throttled to 50% to retain capacity. Poor pressure to no water is expected in the supply zone.
• Brixton tower: Critically low and pumping is ongoing at half capacity due to low reservoir levels.
• Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs: Both reservoirs are critically low due to poor inflows. Poor pressure to no water is expected in the supply zone.
• Crosby reservoir: Supplying on bypass mode due to maintenance. Poor pressure to no water is expected in the supply zone.
The outlets to the following reservoirs will be throttled to 90% overnight to preserve water and build capacity:
• Brixton
• Hursthill 1 and 2
• Rabie Ridge
• Diepsloot
• Chiawelo
• Glenvista
• Berea
• Alexander Park
Customers supplied by the abovementioned reservoirs may experience poor pressure to no flow. Alternative water supply has been arranged for the affected areas.
Residents are requested to observe level-1 water restrictions which are implemented
from 1 September to 31 March. These restrictions prohibit the use of hosepipes to
water gardens, wash cars, clean driveways, as well as fill up swimming pools and
water features between 06:00 and 18:00. Instead, the use of greywater is encouraged.
This is to ensure that systems are kept stable throughout the coming months. We urge

Most reservoirs and towers continue to maintain some stability after making steady recovery overnight, with Alexander Park and Berea reservoirs making notable improvement. However, there are those that are still critically low due to poor incoming supply and high demand in all Johannesburg Water systems.
The Commando system remains constrained and all its reservoirs critical; however, the Brixton tower is stable and supplying normally. The South Hills tower is critically low, while the Linden 1 tower is critically low to empty.
Low pressure to no water may be experienced in parts of the supply zones. As a mitigation strategy, the following systems will be throttled to 90% overnight from 21:00 until 04:00 to preserve water and build capacity for Sunday:
- Brixton reservoir
- Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs
- Rabie Ridge reservoir
- Diepsloot reservoir
- Chiawelo reservoir
- Glenvista reservoir
- Berea reservoir
- Alexander Park reservoir

The reservoir is currently low. Customers may experience poor pressure.
- Linden 1 reservoir and tower
The reservoir is supplying normally, while the tower is currently empty. reservoir recovered slightly during the day and is supplying normally. The tower is expected to improve overnight.
- President Park reservoir and tower
The reservoir is supplying normally while the tower remains on bypass.
RECOVERING SYSTEMS
Pumping into the tower is ongoing and the tower is supplying normally.
The reservoir is critically low due to high demand. The system is being reconfigured to boost the capacity of these reservoirs.
The reservoir remains critically low due to poor incoming supply. The system is being reconfigured to boost the capacity of the reservoir.
