Johannesburg residents urged to use water sparingly

As the country embraces the spring season which leads to hot summer days and cool nights, residents of the City of Johannesburg are reminded that level-1 water restrictions are still in full force. Under level-1 water restrictions, watering of gardens is not allowed in summer months between 6 am and 6 pm (1 Sept to 31 March) and residents are also not allowed to wash driveways and paved areas using hose pipes. The 20% Rand Water restrictions are also still in place, it is therefore critical now to use water sparingly to ensure a continuous sustainable water supply and to avoid putting strain on reservoirs due to high water demand outstripping supply.

Further, Johannesburg Water is confronted with reservoirs’ and towers’ challenges in Midrand, Randpark Ridge and Kensington. These reservoirs and towers currently do not have enough capacity to supply water to residents in the area. We are working around the clock to ensure that we mitigate these challenges and plead with residents of the City of Johannesburg to assist us by being mindful of the amount of water that they use.

Water Saving Tips:
• Do not leave taps dripping
• Wash your car on the grass, this will water your lawn at the same time.
• Shorten your showering time
• Use a glass of water to rinse when brushing your teeth.
• Take shallow baths and avoid filling your bath to a depth greater than 100mm
• Re-use grey water to water your garden or pot plants.

Residents are also urged to continue to report all burst pipes, leaking water meters, open hydrants to:

• 011 375 5555/086 056 2874
• SMS 076 333 5052

Midrand water supply challenges

Rand Water our bulk water supplier had a burst on one of their bulk lines supplying their Klipfontein Reservoir last week. The Klipfontein Reservoir supplies water to all Johannesburg Water Midrand Reservoirs. Rand Water completed their repairs however had an issue with a bulk valve which was stuck in a closed position. This was rectified on Friday (17 September 2021) and there were improvements on our reservoirs. The recovery was however not sufficient and our Rabie Ridge, President Park as well as Grand Central Reservoirs were affected.

Currently, Johannesburg Water is struggling with water supply to our President Park Tower, the Grand Central Reservoir and Tower. The President Park Tower is on bypass but the high lying areas like Ebony Park are affected. The Grand Central reservoir is used to pump water into the Grand Central Tower which then feeds the Halfway House areas like the Midrand CBD, consequently the Grand Central Reservoir levels remains low, restricting Johannesburg Water to pump water into the tower.

The two entities are in constant engagements to supplement supply into Klipfontein Reservoir and such has resulted into increased reservoir levels. We will be monitoring this impact on our reservoirs and update residents.

We have placed water tankers in the affected areas as a form of alternative water supply.
