Hursthill and Waterval systems update
Due to the maintenance taking at the Palmiet system from today,1 July 2024, Eikenhof will be pumping an additional 300 Megalitres (ML). This will add to the 1000 ML that Johannesburg Water has been receiving as a result of the ongoing Rand Water maintenance. This will result in a supply of 1300 ML.
The increased supply will boost the Commando system (Hursthill, Brixton & Crosby) and the Waterval system (Quellerina, Waterval Tower, Linden 1& 2, Kensington B and Blairwogrie reservoir).
As a result of these interventions, there should be gradual improvements throughout the day. Johannesburg Water technical teams will be monitoring the system recovery throughout the day and updates will be provided to customers.
The Entity continues providing alternative water supply in the form of stationary and roaming water tankers.

Update on Rand Water maintenance
Although the maintenance work has been completed at the Zwartkopjes Pump Station by Rand Water, the power outage that occurred last night has affected the progress on recovery, however, the pump station continues to pump at 100%.
Customers in high-lying areas are still impacted by no water, as the system recovers.
Some systems supplied by Zwartkopjes are steadily recovering, however, the following systems are still struggling:
- Crown Gardens Reservoir remains critically low, with the tower currently empty. The reservoir outlet is closed to allow capacity to build up. Residents are currently experiencing no water supply; however, alternative water supply continue to be provided to affected customers.
- Eagles Nest Reservoir critically low. Poor water pressure to no water to be expected in certain parts of the supply zone.
Aeroton Reservoir and Tower are both on bypass. Water levels are critically low, which results in poor pressure or no water in the supply zone. Alternative water supply will be provided for the affected areas.
Pumping at Hector Noris pump station has been reduced due to poor water supply.
Parktown and Berea Reservoir are critically low to empty due to poor supply. Poor pressure to no water is expected in the supply zone.
Yeoville Reservoir is critically low, which affects the pump station. Poor pressure and no water are expected in both the reservoir and pump station zone.
Eikenhof Pump Station
The first part of the maintenance at Eikenhof has been completed. The pumping will be ramped up to 83% overnight until the 12th of July for the remainder of the maintenance work. Most of the Johannesburg Water systems supplied by Eikenhof are experiencing critically low levels or are completely empty.
Soweto Systems
Overall, Soweto systems are low, but supplying normally. However, Doornkop West and Protea Glen reservoirs are currently strained and poor pressure to no water is expected.
Commando System
The incoming supply is low and is impacting all the reservoirs within the system. Alternative water supply continues to be provided.
- Crosby Pump Station for Brixton is currently off due to poor supply which impacts on Brixton Reservoir.
- The Brixton Reservoir is critically low, and the outlet is closed, while the tower is empty. No water is expected in the supply zone. Alternative water supply will be provided to the affected areas. Pumping will resume as soon as the supply improves.
- Hursthill 1 and 2: Both reservoirs are currently empty due to no incoming supply. No water is expected in the supply zone. The Hursthill 2 reservoir outlet remains closed to build capacity when the supply improves.
Randburg System
Most Randburg reservoirs and towers are currently empty due to no incoming supply. Johannesburg Water continues to provide alternative water supply while the maintenance work continues.
The following reservoirs and towers are affected: Linden 1 Reservoir and Tower, Linden 2 Reservoir, Kensington B Reservoir and Tower, Blairgowrie, Quellerina, Waterval, Corriemoor Reservoir, Fairlands, and Honeydew Tower.
Roodepoort System
Currently, most systems are empty due to lack of incoming supply.
The following reservoirs and towers are affected: Helderkruin reservoir and tower, Constantia tower, and Florida North.
The Witpoortjie reservoir has improved but remain low, while the tower is on bypass.
Lenasia Systems
All reservoirs are currently low, resulting in low water pressure or no water supply. Johannesburg Water is continuing to provide alternative water supply options while maintenance work is ongoing.
Daleside Pumpstation
Maintenance work is completed, however the following JW systems are critically: Orange Farm, Ennerdale and Lawley.
Updates will be provided for the duration of the Rand Water maintenance.
