Johannesburg Water’s critical systems making steady progress

Johannesburg Water continues to closely monitor the entity’s reservoirs and towers.

By Sunday morning, the majority of previously critically impacted systems had improved.

Below are the updates on reservoir and towers levels:
1. Alexander Park reservoir: recovered.
2. Crown Gardens reservoir: reservoir levels are sufficient for pumping to the tower. We continue to monitor the consistency of flow to be able to open the outlet at 50%.
3. South Hills tower: recovered. Pumps are operational.
4. Brixton reservoir and tower: reservoir outlet opened at 50% and the tower is full. Reservoir levels are being monitored. We will open at 100% capacity based on reservoir levels.
5. Hursthill 1 and 2: due to low flows, the systems remain critically low.
6. Honeydew reservoir and tower: reservoir levels have decreased to being critically low. Customers in the reservoir zone need to use water sparingly. The tower is at normal capacity.
7. Randpark Ridge: recovered.
8. Helderkruin reservoir and tower: reservoir levels have improved since yesterday and the tower is operating normally.
9. Linden 1 reservoir and tower 1: reservoir levels have increased, and we are pumping into the tower.
10. Quellerina and Waterval towers: supply has improved, and we are pumping to the tower.
11. Horison, Constantia Florida North: pumps are running. Levels are improving.
12. Eagles Nest reservoir: levels are low but recovering.
13. Orlando reservoir: recovered.
14. Blairgowrie reservoir: empty.
15. Boschkop reservoir: recovered.

Alternative water supply is being provided to affected areas. Further updates will be provided.

Notable improvement in Johannesburg Water’s critical systems

There is significant recovery this morning of several Johannesburg Water systems. While levels are not at optimal points at this stage, several areas will have been restored.

This is thanks to Rand Water systems, which are also recovering, causing a positive knock-on effect on Johannesburg Water infrastructure.
The entity continues to prioritise alternative water supply to critical areas such as hospitals, clinics, and schools to ensure essential services are not disrupted.

Update on critically impacted Johannesburg Water towers and reservoirs:
1. Crown Gardens reservoir: levels have increased substantially. We are now pumping to the tower. Should reservoir levels sustain, the outlet will be opened at 50%.
2. Brixton: notable increase in water levels and pumping to the tower has commenced.
3. Honeydew reservoir: the reservoir and tower have recovered.
4. Randpark Ridge and Boschkop reservoirs: they have recovered.
5. Eagles Nest and Orlando reservoirs: improvements have been noted.
6. Horizon, Constantia and Florida North towers: pumps are running and customers in these tower zones will have water restored.
7. Helderkruin reservoir and tower: still critically low and pumping to the tower is not taking place.
8. Linden 1 reservoir and tower: these systems are empty.
9. Quellerina and Waterval towers: no pumping taking place; systems currently empty.
10. Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs: they remain critically low.
11. Blairgowrie reservoir: the system is currently empty.

After Rand Water teams flushed their network to remove air, there has been notable improvements on flows to the Alexander Park reservoir and South Hills tower.

1. Alexander Park reservoir: great improvement this morning (Saturday, 10 June) compared to Friday morning and capacity has doubled compared to Friday. There may still be high-lying areas with little or no water.
2. South Hills tower: water supply has improved, and pumping has started. Customers in the tower zone will have water restored.

Customers are advised that the restoration of affected Johannesburg Water reservoirs and towers will take time to fully stabilise. Alternative water will be provided. Further updates will be provided as they become available.

Update: Johannesburg Water infrastructure affected by strained Rand Water systems

Update: Johannesburg Water infrastructure affected by strained Rand Water systems

Rand Water systems are currently severely constrained, causing reduced supply to various Johannesburg Water infrastructure. As a result, the entity’s systems are critically low to empty.

This follows the power outage at City Power’s Orlando power station that occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning (8 June), which subsequently affected Rand Water’s Eikenhof pump station.

The increase in capacity in Johannesburg Water’s systems, which was noted earlier this morning (Friday, 9 June), has seen noticeable decrease within the past few hours.

The entity continues to prioritise alternative water supply to critical areas such as hospitals, clinics, and schools to ensure essential services are not disrupted.

The outlets of several reservoirs remain isolated (closed). Pumps to specific towers are also isolated as reservoir levels are extremely low or empty.

Update on critically impacted Johannesburg Water towers and reservoirs:
1. Crosby reservoir: critically low.
2. Brixton reservoir: critically low. Tower is stable.
3. Crown Gardens reservoir: critically low to empty. Pumps to the tower, which is empty, are isolated.
4. Eagles Nest reservoir: reservoir is empty.
5. Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs: critically low to empty.
6. Doornkop West reservoir: critically low.
7. Orlando East reservoir: critically low to empty.
8. Blairgowrie reservoir: reservoir is empty.
9. Boschkop reservoir: critically low.
10. Constantia tower: low but stable, one pump operational.
11. Florida North tower: tower is empty.
12. Helderkruin reservoir and tower: reservoir and tower are empty.
13. Honeydew reservoir and tower: recovered.
14. Linden 1 reservoir and tower: both systems are empty.
15. Quellerina tower, Waterval tower and Florida North tower: these towers are empty.
16. Randpark Ridge reservoir: the reservoir is empty.

Customers are advised that the restoration of affected Johannesburg Water reservoirs and towers will take time to fully stabilise. Further updates will be provided.

City Power outage at Orlando power station impacts Rand Water, Johannesburg Water infrastructure

A power outage at City Power’s Orlando power station has impacted Rand Water and Johannesburg Water infrastructure.

The power failure, which occurred at 02:00 this morning, Thursday 8 June, is affecting the pumping at Rand Water’s Eikenhof pump station, and in turn affecting Johannesburg Water’s infrastructure, leaving many suburbs without water.

City Power technicians have been dispatched to the site and are working on resolving the power failure.

According to City Power, initial investigations point to theft and vandalism, where the station’s batteries and linkages were taken, causing feeder jumpers to be broken and bringing the station down.

All areas receiving direct water supply from Rand Water will be impacted heavily by this incident. Johannesburg Water is arranging alternative water supply at strategic areas like hospitals, clinics, schools, municipal offices, police stations and shopping centres.
Residents are urged to use water sparingly during this time as we currently do not have an expected time of completion. Johannesburg Water will provide further updates as they become available.
