Systems Update
Johannesburg Water systems under severe strain due to high demand and high temperatures
High demand due to the hot weather temperatures has led to three of Johannesburg Water’s systems coming under severe strain: the South Hills tower, the Alexander Park reservoir, as well as two Sandton direct feeds. A power trip at Rand Water’s Daleside pumpstation has also impacted Johannesburg Water’s Deep South systems.
The hot weather conditions and high demand over the last few days has depleted reservoir levels. This has also had a negative impact on bulk supplier, Rand Water’s reservoir levels, which are currently low. Although Rand Water is pumping and supplying normally, the increased demand on the entire system has resulted in reservoirs being unable to maintain capacity.
Daleside pumpstation
Following the power trip at Rand Water’s Daleside pumpstation which occurred on Tuesday, 5 December, Johannesburg Water systems were left at critically low levels. Although pumping was restored on Tuesday night, both the Ennerdale and Orange Farm reservoirs are low, while the Lawley reservoir is critically low. Customers in these supply zones will experience poor supply pressure.
South Hills tower
The South Hills tower did not pump overnight due to low tower levels, leading to the tower becoming low. However, pumping resumed in the morning and low flows are coming from the tower. Customers in this supply zone may experience poor pressure to no water, particularly in the high-lying areas.
Alexander Park reservoir
Alexander Park reservoir is critically low. Supply pressure is low, due to poor incoming supply. The outlet was closed overnight to build capacity and has been reopened this morning. However, customers in this supply zone will have poor pressure to no water supply, particularly in high-lying areas.
Sandton systems
As part of a water demand management strategy, Rand Water closed the Sandton supply, impacting the Marlboro and Linbro Park direct feeds, which may cause reduced pressure for the customers in the supply zones. However, Johannesburg Water closed the outlets overnight in order to retain some capacity. The bypass will also be opened in order to mitigate the strain on the systems. Alternative water supply will be arranged should the need arise. Please note that it can take several hours for systems to fully recover after being reopened.
Eagles Nest reservoir
The reservoir is critically low due to poor supply. Poor pressure is expected in high-lying areas. Johannesburg Water is also monitoring the impact on the Alan Manor and Naturena reservoirs (which are supplied by the Eagles Nest reservoir).
Alternative water supply is being arranged through water tankers for the affected areas.
Johannesburg Water will monitor the above systems throughout the day.
Residents are requested to observe level-1 water restrictions which are implemented from 1 September to 31 March. These restrictions prohibit the use of hosepipes to water gardens, wash cars, clean driveways, as well as fill up swimming pools and water features between 06:00 and 18:00. Instead, the use of greywater is encouraged.

Roll out of prepaid smart meter project to parts of Soweto postponed
The switching of Johannesburg Water’s open mode to prepaid smart meters in parts of Soweto has been postponed to 22 January 2024.
Following the switching from open mode to prepaid smart meters in Cosmo City from 1 November, the rolling out was supposed to extend to Diepkloof, Orlando East and West, as well as Orange Farm in December 2023.
The date for the switching in Orange Farm will be communicated in due time.
As such, Johannesburg Water is urging the residents of Orlando East and West, Diepkloof, as well as Orange Farm to ensure that they all have a Customer Interface Unit (CIU). CIUs are display units that are installed inside houses and linked to prepaid water meters and are crucial for loading units when purchasing water credits.
Customers who still do not have CIUs can contact 011 688 1699.
The refusal of switching to prepaid smart meters will lead to Level 3 water cuts, and residents will then have to pay to be reconnected.

Power failure affects pumping into Brixton reservoir
A power failure at the Crosby Pump Station has affected pumping into the Brixton reservoir. The power outage started at 22:00 on Wednesday, 15 November 2023 and lasted until 04:00 on Thursday, 16 November.
As a result, pumping was halted at the Crosby Pump Station, which pumps water into the Brixton reservoir. Supply at the Brixton reservoir and tower, as well as the Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs, has been severely impacted.
Although pumping at the Crosby Pump Station has resumed into the Brixton reservoir, water levels at the Brixton reservoir are currently critically low, and as a result, pumping cannot be resumed until the water levels improve. The Brixton tower is currently empty. The Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs are both critically low.
Pumping from the Brixton reservoir into the tower has not yet resumed, therefore areas supplied by the Brixton reservoir and the tower are currently without water supply. Alternative water supply is being provided to the impacted suburbs.
Johannesburg Water teams are monitoring the situation and have closed the Brixton reservoir outlet to build capacity and recover the system more swiftly.
See the full list of affected suburbs here. Scroll down the list to find the areas supplied by the Brixton and Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs.

Direct feeds into Sandton impacted by the closing of Sandton 1 and 2 meters
Johannesburg Water is aware of the current water supply challenges affecting residents in parts of Sandton which are fed off direct feeds.
The water interruption is due to the closing of the Sandton 1 and 2 meters to allow Rand Water reservoirs, which are further upstream of the system, to recover. These reservoirs are currently at low levels.
As a result, the Linbro Park and Marlboro direct feeds have no water supply. Although the system is due to be opened again today at 15:00, it may take some time for the network to build up capacity and supply normally again.
Johannesburg Water will monitor Sandton system’s direct feeds and reservoir levels.
The following suburbs are affected:
Linbro Park Exts 42, 62, 86, and 89; Linbro Park A.H; Modderfontein A.H; Westlake View Exts 10 and 11; The Woodlands, The Woodlands Exts 1, 4, Woodmead Exts 5, 12, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, 23, 25, and 30; Buccleuch, Sandown Ext 24, Gallo Manor, Gallo Manor Exts 2, 3, 4, and 6; Eastgate Exts 3, 8, and 12; Kelvin, Kelvin View, Marlboro Ext.1, Marlboro, Marlboro Gardens, Marlboro Gardens Ext.1, Kew, Bramley, Bramley North, Bramley North Exts 1 and 2, Bramley Park, Alexandra Exts 24, 25, 32, 35, 51, 52, 59, 66, and 68; Alexandra East Bank, Wesco Park, Glen Atholl, Glen Atholl Ext.1, Kramerville, Wendywood, Morningside Manor Ext.5, Morningside Ext.17, Morningside A.H., Wendywood Exts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 11, and 14, Eastgate, Eastgate Exts 6, 9, 13, 18, and 21; Wynberg, Wynberg Exts 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7; Atholl Gardens, Atholl Exts 1, 5, Atholhurst, Atholhurst Ext.1, Raumarais Park, Barlow Park, and Elton Hill Ext.1,

Vandalism leads to water supply challenges in Lenasia south
Johannesburg Water is aware of the water supply interruption currently affecting Lenasia south and surrounding areas.
This is due to a main water pipeline that was vandalised in Narens Farm informal settlement on Wednesday morning, 1 November. As such, Johannesburg Water had to implement an emergency water shutdown to conduct repairs.
Water supply to Johannesburg Water systems had to be isolated (closed) which affected the Hospital Hill, Lenasia High Level, and Cosmos reservoir supply zones.
Areas affected by Hospital Hill and Lenasia High level reservoirs will have no water supply tonight. Supply is expected to resume by Thursday morning, 2 November. Customers supplied by Cosmos reservoir will not be affected.
See the full list of affected areas here.
