Most of Johannesburg Water reservoirs and towers remain stable

Most of Johannesburg Water’s reservoirs and towers are stable on Friday, 21 July 2023. There is slow recovery on specific infrastructure as the entity continues monitoring capacity.

Challenges that continue to impact recovery include load shedding, which disturbs pumping operations. The higher the load shedding stage, the higher the impact.

The status of affected Johannesburg Water infrastructure:

Soweto region
All reservoirs in Soweto have recovered. A burst pipe was located, and teams are in the process of completing repairs. Water is provided to affected communities in high-lying areas of Mofolo North and Mofolo Central through mobile tankers.

Johannesburg Central region
The Brixton reservoir is currently low at 40%, and the outlet is 100% open, while the tower is operating normally.

The Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs remain critically low. Overnight recovery at Hursthill 2 is affected by water demand.

The capacity within the Berea reservoir has reduced to 21%, while Parktown 2 reservoir has improved to 25%. Both reservoirs are low, and customers are encouraged to use water sparingly.

*Please note that water in the system fluctuates throughout the day as reservoir and tower levels respond to demand patterns according to peak and off-peak periods. Water demand is at its highest during peak, lowest during off peak, and minimum during night flows).

Kaalfontein, Allandale residents affected by burst pipe

Kaalfontein, Allandale residents affected by burst pipe

Kaalfontein and Allandale residents currently have no water due to a burst pipe in Kaalfontein.

Work on the burst pipe will start on Saturday, 22 July, as some of the necessary equipment has not yet arrived. In the meantime, water tankers will be available until 22:30.

This is after the pipe that was repaired on Wednesday, 19 July 2023, ruptured on Thursday night. The fibre glass pipe is old, and it cracks further during cold weather conditions.

The team is currently organising materials and equipment to replace a longer stretch of the pipeline to avoid further bursts. Adjacent to the burst pipe, there is a sewer pipe; the fittings of the pipe replacement need to be moved about 40 metres from the sewer pipes.

At this stage, there is no estimated time of completion and customers will be updated on the progress as it becomes available.

Sites for water tankers are in the below areas:

1. Roaming tanker for Halfbeak Street (near Toll Gate Shisanyama) and surrounding streets, Kaalfontein Ext. 5 (also caters for Allandale)
2. Kaalfontein Ext. 23, next to David Makhubo Secondary School
3. Roaming tanker along Glassnose and Mudhopper streets, Kaalfontein Ext 1
4. 2x roaming tankers in Swordtail Street, Allandale Ext. 12
5. Kaalfontein next to Grey Koka Primary
6. Kaalfontein next to ZCC Church
7. Roaming tanker in Kaalfontein Ext. 7, behind Boxer Superstore
8. Kaalfontein next to Yarona Shopping Centre (Tigerfish and Archerfish streets). Covers the Allandale area

Further updates will be provided to customers.

UPDATE: More water tanks added for Blue Hills and Sun Valley residents

UPDATE: More water tanks added for Blue Hills and Sun Valley residents

Johannesburg Water’s Blue Hills and Sun Valley are still not getting any water supply from the City of Tshwane, which is in turn not getting any supply from Rand Water.

As a result, the entity has added two more water tanks for the affected residents in Midrand.

This comes after Rand Water was struggling to recover after multiple power failures. According to the bulk water supplier, balancing of the systems was being done on Sunday, 2 July 2023 and as a result, there would be challenges of inconsistent supply.

One of the systems affected is Rand Water’s Brakfontein reservoir, which feeds a City of Tshwane reservoir that supplies Johannesburg Water’s Blue Hills and Sun Valley areas in Midrand. At the moment, there is no water coming into Blue Hills and Sun Valley from Tshwane because the City is not getting enough supply from Rand Water.

Johannesburg Water is providing alternative water supply. Water tankers have been placed at the following locations:

1. African View Blue Hills Complex
2. Blue Hills Shopping Centre
3. Summit View Estate, opposite the Blue Hills Shopping Centre
4. Sasol garage, Blue Hills
5. Kilimanjaro Complex, Blue Hills
6. Spar Summit Road

There is currently no estimated time for recovery. Further details will be provided as they become available.

Update on Johannesburg Water reservoirs and towers

3 July 2023 – 10:00

Customer Notice

Update on Johannesburg Water reservoirs and towers

Our reservoirs and towers are at stable levels across the City this morning, while the Commando system (Brixton, Hursthill and Crosby) continues gaining capacity.

At the Hector Norris pump station, which supplies parts of the Johannesburg CBD, we have implemented a backup power supply due to current City Power outage. Customers should not be affected by an outage at this time.

However, it’s important to remember that water is a precious resource, and we need to continue using it wisely even as the situation improves. We therefore urge residents to assist us in efforts to preserve water and we appreciate the cooperation.

Midrand customers affected by low supply from Rand Water

2 July 2023 – 20:00

Customer Notice

Midrand customers affected by low supply from Rand Water

Johannesburg Water customers in the Blue Hills and Sun Valley areas in Midrand are affected by no water supply due to low supply from Rand Water.

This is because the bulk water supplier is still struggling to recover after multiple power failures. According to Rand Water, balancing of the systems is still being done and as a result, there will be challenges of inconsistent supply.

As Rand Water recovers its systems, some of the areas within municipalities are therefore likely to experience low water pressure to no water during the recovery of the system.

Johannesburg Water is providing alternative water supply. Water tankers have been placed at the following locations:

1. Summit Road (next to Spar SaveMor)
2. Blue Hills Shopping Centre
3. Blue Hills Ext 15 & 32 complexes
4. Summit View Estate, opposite the Blue Hills Shopping Centre

There is currently no estimated time for recovery. Further details will be provided as they become available.

City Power area outage impacts Johannesburg CBD central suburbs

City Power area outage impacts Johannesburg CBD central suburbs

There are water issues in Johannesburg CBD, Marshalltown, Ferreirasdorp, and surrounding areas. This is due to a City Power area outage on Friday night, 30 June 2023 that affected the Hector Norris pump station in Turffontein, which supplies water to the above-mentioned areas and surroundings.

The pump station is still offline, and Johannesburg Water technical teams are in the process of organising a generator. Pumping is estimated to resume later today once a generator has been connected to the site.

Areas in the Hector Norris supply zone, especially higher lying areas, are affected with no water. Lower lying areas are experiencing poor pressure to no water.

Water tankers are being arranged for the affected areas.

Further updates will be provided when they become available.
