Johannesburg Water stands by its notice to residents
Johannesburg Water stands by its notice of possible water supply challenges that were
anticipated over the weekend.
Rand Water, our bulk supplier, notified the Entity that they urgently needed to repair a leak on
A6 pipeline wherein they will also take the opportunity to replace damaged valves in
Zwartkopjes. The notification stated that the Rand Water’s Vereeniging Pumping Station was
to reduce its pumping load by 100ML to the Zwartkopjes system, Zwartkopjes was going to
pump 660Ml/d instead of 760Ml/d.
Johannesburg Water’s interest is solely to ensure that we provide a reasonable uninterrupted
service to you, our clients, and where there are planned interruptions inform you in time as
per our service level agreement. We wish to clarify that at no point was the Entity malicious or
misinformed its customers.

Rand Water Emergency Shutdown due to major burst on the A6 pipeline
Johannesburg Water wishes to inform residents of the Rand Water 30 hours emergency shutdown, due to a major burst on the A6 pipeline. This pipeline supplies water from Vereeniging purification works to Zwartkopjes pumpstation. Water will be isolated today, 04 November 2022 at 18h00 to effect repairs.
Rand Water and Johannesburg Water infrastructure (towers and reservoirs) will have maximum capacity during the shutdown, however the following reservoirs, towers and direct feeds will be affected, should the water level drop to critical levels.
Reservoirs and Towers affected:
Foresthill tower, Yeoville reservoir, Berea reservoir, Hursthill reservoirs, Parktown reservoirs and Crown Gardens reservoir.
Forest Hill Tower zone:
Oakdene, parts of Rosettenville, Kenilworth, The Hill, Towerby, Linmeyer, Southdale, Foresthill, Townsview, Robertsham, Gillview, Winchester Hills, Chrisville, Turf Club, Glenanda, Turffontein and Klipriviersberg estate.
Yeoville reservoir zone:

A reminder of Level-1 water restrictions in the City of Johannesburg
Yesterday, Tuesday 01 November 2022, our bulk supplier Rand Water announced lifting of
stage-2 water restrictions. Stabilisation of the systems, assisted by good rains, has been a
joint and collaborative effort by Rand Water and the municipalities
Johannesburg Water encourages residents of the City of Johannesburg to continue reducing
consumption, and to observe level-1 water restrictions implemented every year from 1
September to 31 March. Level-1 water restrictions prohibits the use of hosepipes between 6
am and 6 pm and the use of hosepipes for paved areas and driveways. This is to ensure that
systems are kept stable throughout the coming summer months.
Water saving tips:
• Do not leave taps dripping,
• Shorten your showering time,
• Re-use grey water to water your garden,
• Harvest rainwater.

Rand Water Overnight Flows Reduction Impacts Johannesburg Water’s Commando
System
The Commando system’s recovery was disrupted due to reduced flows from Rand Water’s
supply. The reduced flows from Rand Water are due to diverting water from Eikenhof to
recover their Palmiet system which was affected by the power failure two days ago at
Zuikerbosh. This resulted to very low levels in some of the critical reservoirs including the three
reservoirs under the Commando system.
Despite several interventions to isolate Johannesburg Water reservoirs to build capacity, we
were unable to salvage the situation overnight. Both entities have reached an agreement to
put the full load back to Eikenhof so systems can start recovering.
Johannesburg Water will close the Brixton reservoir at midday to build capacity and assist
supplement water from the Crosby pump station to Hursthill reservoirs which are also at
critical low levels. This will negatively impact all residents on this grid. Systems are being
monitored and both Helen Joseph and Rahima Moosa Child and Mother hospitals have
adequate supplies.
Residents are again requested to observe Stage 2 Rand Water restrictions and use water
sparingly and not use hosepipes to water gardens, wash cars or clean driveways but use
grey water instead. We also urge residents to report any form of vandalism and theft of
water infrastructure to 0800 00 25 87.

Stage 6 load shedding affecting Johannesburg Water infrastructure
Johannesburg Water wishes to inform residents that pump stations which supply various
towers, in parts of the City of Johannesburg, are isolated during load shedding.
Towers impacted have low to no water during the load shedding period.
The affected Towers are as follows:

2022 to 31 March 2023.

UPDATE ON THE CITY’S WATER SUPPLY CHALLENGES
On Wednesday, 12 October 2022, the newly elected City of Johannesburg MMC for
Environment, and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD) Cllr Mpho Sesedinyane met with
Johannesburg Water senior management team to understand challenges of water supply
under the Commando system, with particular focus on the Crosby, Brixton and Hurst Hill
Reservoir 1 & 2 supply zones which cover wards 58, 69, 86 and 87 in the City of Johannesburg
since towards end of September 2022 to date.
The interruptions of the bulk supply are caused by power interruptions due to load shedding
or normal power failures on the Rand Water purification and pumping systems as well as the
Johannesburg Water pumping systems. Furthermore, Johannesburg Water presented the
analysis of the system, as well as medium to long term measures (2 – 4 years) in the above
reservoir complexes to ensure sustainability of the water supply.
The MMC conducted an oversight visit to the affected system and there are improvements as
the system is currently stable as compared to the previous day. The MMC emphasises with
all the affected customers for their patience during this time compounded by heatwave and
will monitor the system together with Johannesburg Water to ensure that all issues are
resolved and there is effective water supply.
Residents are again requested to observe Stage 2 Rand Water restrictions and use water
sparingly and not use hosepipes to irrigate or water gardens, wash cars or clean driveways
but use grey water instead.
