VERIFICATION OF PREPAID METER DATA (STAND BY STAND VERIFICATION)

Johannesburg Water is embarking on a prepaid meter data verification exercise in selected townships/suburbs across the City of Johannesburg. The data verification exercise will be conducted by the Johannesburg Water service provider African Meter Reading (AMR) who will visit each and every stand in areas with prepaid meters.

The verification is aimed at updating customer data and the collected data will be used only to update the vending system and SAP with the correct meter and customer information.

The aim of this project is to:

  • Verify data to update system
  • Update customer data
  • Check meter number
  • Check if meter is functional

This project started at the end of November and will be rolled out in phases in all the parts of Soweto, Lehae, Cosmo City and Riverside View with the inclusion of all households in Diepkloof.

In Braamfischer, Devland and Lehae the service provider will be verifying all the meters in these areas even those with conventional meters.

Customers are asked to note that African Meter Reading will not be enforcing any by-laws during the implementation of the data verification exercise for customers that have by-passed meters, vandalized meters or illegally connected their homes to the system. The Information gathered by AMR during the exercise will not be used to prosecute or penalise transgressors.

Residents are asked to note that personnel doing the verification tests will be easily identifiable with Johannesburg Water branded reflective vest, a cap and Identity card  which they will be required to wear at all times during working hours. The AMR office line 010 110 0598 can be used to verify the identity of the personnel who will be doing the verification.

POWER FAILURE AT TREATMENT PLANT IMPACTED SOME RESERVOIRS

Rand Water’s Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant experienced a power supply failure, which affected water pumping into some Johannesburg Water reservoirs.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, 24 November 2020, as a result of an Eskom cable failure between Eskom’s Snowden Substation and Rand Water. Eskom was called in and worked on repairs which were completed at 12:30 today 25 November 2020.

This incident has resulted in the low capacity of some Johannesburg Water (Hurstshill and Roodepoort area) reservoirs levels which are quite low. Full pumping has now begun by Rand Water and we are monitoring the situation.

Johannesburg Water would like to encourage residents to use water sparingly until our capacity has improved. Updates will be provided on social media pages.

Johannesburg Water launches major sewer unblocking project in Greater Ivory Park

Johannesburg Water Midrand depot has been busy at work targeting twelve hot spot extensions In Greater Ivory Park from November till the end of December 2020, clearing 3055 sewer blockages in over 34 kilometres.

Sewer blockages are increasing in the area as a whole and are getting more difficult to resolve and the old methodology of a Sewer Team with rods is not giving the intended results in the area anymore, even though the blockage might be resolved it would normally block again within 24 hours.  This is largely due to the large amount of “debris” in the system which settles in the line thereby causing repeat blockages.

When clearing blockages, teams usually find material such as sand, rags, sanitary towels, clothing, rocks and at times foetuses of aborted babies and these foreign objects are not what a sewer line is intended to convey.

The illegal connections to the system, encroachment of uncontrolled buildings and shacks into the servitudes, large numbers of backyard dwellings, with many existing dwellings having more than ten backyard rooms. This leads to overuse of the system and insufficient capacity.

Part of the implementation plan of this project is to perform repairs on these identified Hotspots which will reduce recurring sewer blockages. They identified twelve hotspot extensions within greater Ivory Park include Kaalfontein Ext 1, 4, 5, 23 and Ivory Park ext 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 12, 13 and Rabie Ridge ext 5.

Residents are urged to look after the infrastructure and report all service failures, more importantly, use the sewer lines for its intended purpose which is to transport waste.
