Johannesburg Water Reservoirs that were isolated now opened

Johannesburg Water’s infrastructure was isolated on 22 June 2022 to aid in the continuing search for Khayalethu Magadla, in the last stretch of the sewer line leading to the wastewater treatment works.

Customers are informed that the reservoirs are now opened, and it will take about 4 to 5 hours for full restoration of the network.

The affected reservoirs supply the following areas:

Doornkop West Reservoir: parts of the following areas will be affected:
Thulani, Lufhereng, Doornkop, Protea Glen, Protea City, Dobsonville Gardens, Green Village, Slovoville and Dobsonville.

Chiawelo Reservoir: parts of the following areas will be affected
Chiawelo, Klipriversoog, Dhlamini, Protea Glen, Protea Gardens, Protea South, Protea North and Mapetla

Protea Glen Direct Feed:
All extensions of Protea Glen

Zondi Reservoir: parts of the following areas will be affected
Tladi, Naledi, Emdeni, Moletsane, Zondi, Doornkop, Zola, Protea, Protea North, Protea Glen, Protea North Ext 1, Jabulani, Mofolo North and Jabavu Central Western

JW arranges alternative water supply for affected residents

Johannesburg Water officials and the authorities from the SAPS and EMS continue with the search for Khayalethu, a 6-year old boy who allegedly fell into a sewer manhole while playing with his friends at Dlamini park, Soweto on Sunday, 12th June 2022.

The search operation will carry on until midnight. The water was isolated on 22 June 2022 to aid in the continuing search in the last stretch of the sewer line leading to the wastewater treatment works.

Alternate water supply: Affected areas Soweto:

The distribution of mobile tankers is prioritized thus:

2 x mobile tankers for Ward 135 (Protea Glen and extensions).

2 x mobile tankers for Doornkop, Tshepisong and Slovoville.

2 x mobile tankers for Protea North, Chiawelo, Senaoane and Mapetla.

2 x mobile tankers for Green Village, Dobsonville Gardens

JW would like to plead with customers, especially in Protea, for calmness so that we can get in and supply water. Residents are informed that everyone will have water by tomorrow.

JW further pleads with the community for support, understanding and patience as the team focuses on the search and recovery of the body of the missing boy. Further updates will be advised as the exercise progresses.

JW infrastructure isolated in aiding the search and rescue operation

Johannesburg Water officials and the authorities from the SAPS and EMS continue with the search for Khayalethu, a 6-year old boy who allegedly fell into a sewer manhole while playing with his friends at Dlamini park, Soweto on Sunday, 12th June 2022.

The water was isolated on 22 June 2022 to aid in the continuing search in the last stretch of the sewer line leading to the wastewater treatment works.

Zondi reservoir will be isolated to reduce water levels more efficiently at the outfall system, allowing the search and rescue team to proceed with investigations. Its estimated that supply from Zondi reservoir will be restored by midnight on 24th June 2022.

The Doornkop West reservoir, Chiawelo reservoir and Protea Glen Direct Feed will remain isolated until further notice

These reservoirs supply the following areas:

The plugging of specific sewer points to reduce flow, will result in blockages. Customers will note an increase in sewer blockages in the following areas:

Protea South, Chiawelo and Midway Industrial

Investigations are still in progress, as water levels need to be reduced much further to allow for the search and rescue team to inspect the sewer line.

In order to make further progress, the Doornkop West reservoir, Chiawelo reservoir and Protea Glen Direct Feed will remain isolated until further notice.

Johannesburg Water to launch the newly constructed Lenasia reservoir

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Mpho Phalatse, will on the 30th June 2022, launch the newly constructed Lenasia High Level Reservoir. She will be accompanied by MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Michael Sun and Johannesburg Water’s Managing Director Ntshavheni Mukwevho.

The new 15 ML Lenasia High Level Reservoir was constructed to supplement the existing 6ML Lenasia High Level Reservoir, which had insufficient capacity to supply the area dependant on it.

JW reservoirs and sewer network remain isolated in aiding the search and rescue operation towards the split chambers

Johannesburg Water officials and the authorities from the SAPS and EMS continue with the search for Khayalethu, a 6-year-old boy who allegedly fell into a sewer manhole while playing with his friends at Dlamini park, Soweto on Sunday, 12th June 2022.

The water was isolated again yesterday, 22 June 2022 to aid in the continuing search in the last stretch of the sewer line leading to the wastewater treatment works. The team will proceed with the investigation, as water levels continue to drop. In order to make further progress reservoirs will remain isolated until further notice.

Alternative water supply will be arranged for critical customers such as clinics and schools.

The following reservoirs and direct feeds will be affected:

Doornkop West reservoir, Chiawelo reservoir, Lenasia Cosmos reservoir, Lenasia Hospital Hill reservoir, Lenasia High Level reservoir, Gemsbok direct feed and Protea Glen Direct feed.
