Veld fire affects electricity supply to pumping stations

Veld fire affects electricity supply to pumping stations

Veld fire affects electricity supply to pumping stations

Media Statement
19 September 2019

A veld fire was experienced last night – Wednesday: 18 September 2019; as a result the, ESKOM’s Snowden Substation was negatively impacted. The substation supplies 88kV power to Rand Water’s Zuikerbosch Treatment Plant and the Lethabo Pumping Station. This meant that both of Rand Water’s main treatment plants were not able to treat and pump water to the
reservoirs.

As a result the following Johannesburg Water systems were affected:
1. South Hill Tower : Linmeyer, Rosana and South hills
2. Ennerdale Res : Ennerdale, Lawley, Finetown
3. HurstHill Reservoirs: Westbury, Hurst Hill, Albertville, Montclare, Northcliff, Parktown, Greenside
1. Yeoville Reservoir: Linksfield, Kensington, Doornfontein, Jeppestown
4. Brixton Reservoir: Mayfair, Pageview, Coronationville, Auckland Park, Johannesburg CBD
5. Linksfield Reservoir: Linksfield, Kensington, Doornfontein, Jeppestown
6. Linbro Park Reservoir: Frankenwald, Alexandra, Linbro Park, Modderfontein
7. Alexander Park Reservoir: Heriotdale, Cleveland, Benrose, Wychwood
8. Eagles Nest : Southgate, Meredale, Eikenhof, Mondeor, Naturena

Customers are urged to please use water sparingly while we restore the system to normality. Please kindly refrain from using drinking water for gardening, washing of cars and cleaning hard surfaces, filling up of swimming pools as this will shorten the recovery time of reservoirs. Areas which are severely affected will be serviced via mobile water tankers.

Spring Season – a reminder of level 1 water restrictions

Spring Season – a reminder of level 1 water restrictions

Spring Season – a reminder of level 1 water restrictions

Media statement

04 September 2019

As the country embrace the beginning of spring season which will lead to hot summer months soon, residents of the City of Johannesburg are reminded that level-1 water restrictions are still in full force. It is empirical that water conservation remains a strong priority in Johannesburg to ensure a continuous supply and avoid limitations of reservoirs due to high water demand outstripping supply. All residents are also reminded that as the City of Johannesburg, we rely on supply from other Provinces that feed into the Vaal Dam system in order for us to have water on our taps,  and should always be mindful of the amount of water we use daily.

Under level-1 water restrictions :

  • Watering of gardens is not allowed between 6 am and 6 pm in summer months (1 Sept to 31 March) and furthermore,
  • It is not allowed for residents  to wash paved areas and driveways using hose pipes
  • Residents are urged to report all leaks

Water saving tips:

  • Do not leave taps dripping
  • Wash your car on the grass, this will water your lawn at the same time.
  • Shorten your showering time
  • Use a glass of water to rinse when brushing your teeth.
  • Take shallow baths and avoid filling your bath to a depth greater than 100mm
  • Re-use grey water to water your garden or pot plants.

Residents are also urged to continue to report all burst pipes, leaking water meters, open hydrants to:

Johannesburg Water is committed to providing sustainable water and water restrictions will be enforced by fines to consumers who contravened the Water Services By-law and consumers are urged to report non-compliance to the JMPD 24/7 hotline on 011 758 9650.
