Joburg water upgrades water metre in Cosmo City

Johannesburg Water advises residents of Cosmo City about a programme to change/upgrade the current water metres to new smart metres. Sakhikhaya Construction Company has been appointed to do the installations at the following extensions of Cosmo City.

Extension Three
Extension Five
Extension Seven
Extension Eight
Extension Nine
Extension Ten

The smart metres will benefit the community a great deal as they will be able to buy water electronically and improve service delivery in the area. A total of 5000 households will be visited by the service provider and we appeal for cooperation in order to complete the project on time. Technical queries should be directed to site camp Manager on 067 403 6278, and if in doubt, please ask for an identity card with a name and surname and a picture of the consultant. We appeal to all residents to continue to report all water and sewer leaks and are reminded that level 1 water restrictions are still in place in the City of Johannesburg.

Rand Water planned maintenance wraps with minimal disruption

Johannesburg residents can breathe a sigh of relief after the 54-hour shut down for maintenance work on the B11 bulk supply line of Rand Water went by with minimum impact on households. The installation of the butterfly valve on the 2, 500mm diameter line has now been completed and recharging of the pipeline has commenced. The MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Councillor Nico de Jager wishes to thank residents who adhered to the calls to use water sparingly and to save water during this time. This ensured that a complete no-water situation was avoided.

He further expressed his gratitude to Rand Water for having completed the job within the specified time and keeping residents continuously informed on the progress of this massive undertaking. MMC de Jager also wishes to thank Joburg Water and the various media platforms for their role in keeping residents informed on the status of the project. In spite of this, MMC de Jager also reminded all residents that level-1 water restrictions are still in place. He urged all customers to continue to use water sparingly as we are in the middle of rain-starved Winter. Johannesburg Water, in an effort to maintain a culture of water conservation, is still implementing Level -1 water restrictions according to section 44 (3) of the Water Services By-law: On an annual basis, between 06:00 – 18:00 during 1 September and 31 March; and between 08:00 – 16h00 during 1 April and 31 August, all consumers are prohibited from watering and irrigating their gardens;
All consumers are prohibited from using a hose-pipe to clean paved areas and driveways with municipal water.

Rand Water planned maintenance

Friday, 21 June 2019, MMC Nico De Jager addressed a media conference at the Brixton Water Tower to discuss new interventions which have been put in place to ensure that Johannesburg is the municipality least affected by planned major water maintenance to be conducted by Johannesburg Water’s bulk water supplier, Rand Water. These are new action-steps taken by the entity in order to limit any negative impact on service delivery.Johannesburg Water had taken note of concern raised regarding the upcoming planned maintenance by Rand Water which will be conducted on some of their main lines.

Concern has been raised by the residents as to the impact of the planned maintenance on water supply within the City, given that supply to some of the City’s reservoirs and towers made become limited over 54 hour maintenance period. However, I wish to assure residents that our team has put sufficient measures in place to make sure Johannesburg residents are least affected of all during this maintenance period. During the maintenance period, the Rand Water purification plant will still be operational and will supply water to our water supply systems for the duration of the valve installation so as to help in efforts to replenish our reservoirs.

Rand Water will also supply water via the Palmiet and Eikenhof pump stations to Johannesburg Water reservoirs. Furthermore, Rand Water will ensure that prior to the commencement of the shutdown, all reservoirs supplying the City will be filled to capacity to ensure water supply during the shutdown period. Our Reservoirs have the capacity to supply water for up to two days. This said, due to the extremely long hours involved in the maintenance process, some of the high lying areas may experience erratic low pressure. The City does not anticipate any unusual water supply disruptions during the shutdown. However, Johannesburg Water will continuously update residents on the progress of the work via all media platforms.

This is in compliance with the National Water Act No. 36 of 1998, which stipulates that the Water Services Authority (CoJ) must issue a notice of potential water interruptions to all its consumers well ahead of the event taking place.Johannesburg Water appeals to all residents of the City of Johannesburg to use water sparingly during the shutdown in order to avoid a complete no-water situation and reminds all customers that level-1 water restrictions are still in place. MMC Nico de Jager wishes to reiterate that Johannesburg Water is in consultation with Rand Water to ensure that the planned maintenance has minimal impact on our residents.

Johannesburg Water advises all residents of the City of Johannesburg that Rand Water which is our bulk water supplier will be conducting maintenance on some of their main lines that will affect supply to all City of Johannesburg reservoirs and towers for 54 hours from Monday 24 June 2019. Please note that this does not necessarily mean that there will be no water during the 54 hours shutdown period, however, due to the extremely long hours, some areas may experience low pressure. Our Reservoirs have the capacity to supply for a maximum of two days at a time and the system will not run out of water as we will still get limited supply from Rand Water.

Johannesburg Water appeals to all residents of the City of Johannesburg not to panic and continue to use water sparingly during the shutdown in order to avoid a complete no-water situation and reminds all customers that level 1 water restrictions are still in place. The shutdown will also affect a number of municipalities across the Gauteng Province and we apologize for the inconvenience. Johannesburg Water advises all residents of the City of Johannesburg that Rand Water which is
our main bulk water supplier is planning a major shutdown that will affect all our reservoirs and
towers in terms of water supply for 54 hours from 24 June 2019.

The shutdown is on the B11 pipeline to install a 2500mm Butterfly valve from Lethabo to
Vereeniging pumping station and this will result in the limited water supply to all Rand Water
customers.

Please note that this does not necessarily mean that there will be no water during the 54 hours
shutdown period, however, due to the extremely long hours, some of the areas may experience a
shortage of water or low pressure.

Johannesburg Water appeals to all residents of the City of Johannesburg to use water sparingly
during the shutdown in order to avoid a complete no-water situation and reminds all that that level
1 water restrictions are still in place.

The shutdown will also affect a number of municipalities across the Gauteng Province and we
apologize for the inconvenience. Report all leaks to the Call Center on 011 375 5555 and follow
our social media pages for regular updates.
