Johannesburg Water (JW) would like to thank the residents of the City of Johannesburg for their unwavering patience throughout the Rand Water planned maintenance.
The JW systems that were affected by the planned interruption have recovered and are currently supplying areas at normal capacity. The expected improvements in reservoir levels should continue during the course of today and estimated to be back to normality within the next 48 hours.
The increase in the average flow into the Rand Water Commando system has shown significant improvement and continues assisting in building capacity into the Brixton/ Hursthill/ Crosby reservoirs.
Alternative water supply is focused on the Hursthill supply zone.
Mobile water tankers are providing water in the following areas:
• Newclare
• Westbury
• Claremont
• Coronationville
• Sophiatown
• Westdene
Johannesburg Water urges customers to continue to reduce consumption as much as possible to assist with recovery of the system.

Since the commissioning of the Rand Water (RW) B 11 line, the RW Vereeniging purification works is currently running at full capacity as from yesterday. This has positively impacted on Rand Water’s Zwartkoppies system.
Zwartkoppies System:
The increased capacity into the Rand Water’s Forest Hill reservoir and Johannesburg Water’s Yeoville reservoir, has improved supply into Johannesburg Water’s Eagle Nest and Aeroton reservoirs. The improvement also allowed Johannesburg Water to start pumping into its Forest Hill and South Hills Water Towers. The Crown Gardens reservoir is unfortunately still at a critical level.
Eikenhof System:
This system is running at a reduced capacity of (1000Ml) from early this morning. This however improved to full capacity (1200Ml) from around 10:00. This allows Rand Water to build capacity into their Meredale reservoir as well as into Johannesburg Water’s Commando and Randburg/ Roodepoort systems. Rand Water’s Meredale reservoir is still at critical levels, which impacts the bulk supply into the JW Commando system ( Brixton, Crosby and Hursthill). Until we are able to sustain an average flow at 2500 kl per hour into the Commando system, the full recovery continues to be a challenge. Currently the flow into the Commando system is 1000 kl/hour. At this stage we are recovering the Crosby and Brixton systems. The Brixton tower is normalizing and the reservoir is operating at 50% capacity.
The Linden One Reservoir and Tower, Waterval Tower, Quellerina Tower, Florida North Tower and Constantia towers also still remains empty due to reduced supply from Rand Water Eikenhof system but with the full capacity supply since 10:00 will most likely improve in the later hours of today.
The reservoirs and towers in the Soweto Areas continue to be at a stable but low levels. This system is not severely compromised but is in the process of slow recovery.
Johannesburg Water is providing alternate supply to affected areas where feasible. We urge customers to reduce consumption as the systems gain capacity and recover.
We appeal to all to use water sparingly and to remind them that level one water restrictions are still in place. Watering of gardens is not allowed between 6 am and 6 pm in summer months (1 Sept to 31 March) and furthermore, it is not allowed to wash paved areas and driveway using hosepipes.
