Systems Update

Progress on phase two of Rand Water Palmiet Pump Station maintenance (15 – 17 July 2024 for 50 hours)

The second phase of the maintenance of Rand Water’s Palmiet Pump Station has been completed, and the systems are being charged. It is anticipated that Rand Water will start pumping after midday and back to full load by this afternoon. However, it will take several days for Johannesburg Water systems to fully recover.

Most Johannesburg Water systems have declined but supplying fairly, while some are critically low to empty. As a result, a combination of poor pressure to no water is expected.

The following systems are affected:

South Hills Tower is currently empty due to low levels at the supplying reservoir. No water is expected in the supply zone.

Alexander Park Reservoir is empty due to poor supply from the reservoir. No water is expected in the supply zone. The outlet will be closed overnight to build capacity.

Linksfield Reservoir is empty, and no water is expected in the supply zone.

Randjieslaagte Reservoir is critically low. Poor pressure is expected in certain parts, particularly high-lying areas.

Sandton systems
The Sandton reservoirs are stable and are supplying fairly.

The Linbro and Marlboro direct feeds are supplying normally, however, intermittent supply is expected.

Midrand systems
Some Midrand reservoirs are stable, while others are empty.

The Rabie Ridge and President Park reservoirs are critically low. A combination of poor pressure to no water is expected in the supply zones of the reservoirs.

Johannesburg Water is monitoring the decline of the systems supplied from Palmiet and will implement necessary interventions as and when required.

Alternative water supply has been arranged and will be placed at strategic points within the residential areas.

Areas fed by Palmiet.

Evening systems update

10 November 2023 – 17:30

Rabie Ridge reservoir and tower
Both the reservoir and tower maintained stability during the day, and the outlet is operating at 30% configuration.

Linden1 tower
Currently low but supplying normally. Johannesburg Water is monitoring the downwards trend.

Commando System
•Brixton reservoir and tower: Both remained stable throughout the day and are supplying normally.
• Hursthill 1 reservoir: Maintained stability during the day, but level remains low. The water supply is normal due to current configuration.
•Hursthill 2 reservoir: Maintained stability throughout the day, but level remains low. Poor pressure is expected in high-lying areas of the supply zone.
• Crosby reservoir: The reservoir levels are low. Poor pressure is expected in high-lying areas.
The following reservoirs will be throttled to 90% overnight to retain water and build capacity for Saturday:
• Brixton
• Hursthill 2
• Rabie Ridge
• Diepsloot
• Alexander Park

Customers supplied by the abovementioned reservoirs may experience poor pressure to no flow. Alternative water supply has been arranged for the affected areas.

Residents are requested to observe level-1 water restrictions which are implemented
from 1 September to 31 March. These restrictions prohibit the use of hosepipes to
water gardens, wash cars, clean driveways, as well as fill up swimming pools and
water features between 06:00 and 18:00. Instead, the use of greywater is encouraged.

15 December 2023 – 16:30 Systems Update

Rabie Ridge reservoir and tower
Rabie Ridge reservoir Both the reservoir and tower continue to gradually improve, but the reservoir is still experiencing high demand and low water levels. The system continues to supply at 30% while the tower remains on bypass mode. Johannesburg Water will monitor the system.

Alexander Park reservoir
The Alexander Park reservoir continues to gradually improves and the supply is normal. However, there is high demand on the system. The outlet will be closed overnight to build capacity for Saturday.

Eagles Nest reservoir
Although the Eagles Nest reservoir made some gains overnight, the system is still critically low due to increasing demand and poor supply pressure. Low pressure is expected in the supply zone, especially high-lying areas; however, the system has been reconfigured to boost supply.

Sandton system update
Most of the reservoirs are supplying normally and the Entity will continue monitoring the systems. As a mitigation strategy the following reservoirs will be throttled to 90% overnight to retain water and build capacity. The overnight throttling is scheduled to begin at 21:00 and conclude in the morning at 04:00. Some areas may still encounter low water pressure while the system recovers.
• Illovo reservoir
• Bryanston reservoir
• Morningside reservoir

Soweto Systems
The Soweto systems continue to maintain stability overnight and throughout the day, however, they will be affected by overnight throttling (reducing pressure and flow). The bulk supply remains restricted as a Water Demand management strategy. The Zondi reservoir supply is currently at 60%, while the Power Park reservoir supply is at 50%. Areas fed by the Zondi reservoir, Doornkop reservoir and Power Park reservoir are affected by low pressure, while high-lying areas are affected by no water. Bramfischerville is supplying at 50%, and poor pressure to no water is expected most parts of the area. Customers in phases 7 and 9 will experience poor pressure to no water. Certain areas supplied by the Protea Glen tower and direct feeds are experiencing poor pressure to no water.

Commando System
• Brixton reservoir: The reservoir continues to be stable and is supplying normally.
• Brixton tower: The higher reservoir levels led to an improvement in the tower levels over night.
• Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs: Hursthill 1 made some gains overnight, while Hursthill 2 remained the same. Both reservoir levels are low and poor pressure to no water is expected in the supply zones. The outlets to both reservoirs are fully opened. Hursthill 1 reservoir has been configured to boost supply while Hursthill reservoir will be closed overnight to build capacity for tomorrow.
• Crosby reservoir: The reservoir made slight improvements overnight, however, it continues to be low but supplying normally.
The following reservoirs will either be closed or throttled to 90% overnight to retain water and build capacity:
• Soweto: Freedom Park, Doornkop West, Power Park, Orlando East, and Zondi
• Commando: Brixton, Hursthill 2
• Crown Gardens
• Alexandra Park (closed)
• Midrand: Rabie Ridge, Grand Central, President Park, Erand, and Diepsloot

The Randjieslaagte and Berea reservoirs may be throttled overnight if necessary due to high demand.
Customers supplied by these reservoirs may experience poor pressure to no flow. Alternative water supply has been arranged through water tankers for the affected areas. Johannesburg Water continues to monitor the above systems.

Residents are requested to observe level-1 water restrictions which are implemented from 1 September to 31 March. These restrictions prohibit the use of hosepipes to water gardens, wash cars, clean driveways, as well as fill up swimming pools and water features between 06:00 and 18:00. Systems Update

Rabie Ridge reservoir and tower
The Rabie Ridge reservoir levels have improved since Wednesday, but the reservoir is still experiencing high demand and low water levels. The system continues to supply at 30% while the tower remains on bypass mode. Johannesburg Water will monitor the system.

Alexander Park reservoir
The Alexander Park reservoir made slight improvements overnight and the supply is normal. However, there is high demand on the system. The outlet will be closed overnight to build capacity for Friday.
