Update on phase two of Rand Waterâs Palmiet Maintenance and recovery of South Hills tower and Alexander Park
South Hills Tower is supplied from Rand Waterâs Klipriviesburg Reservoir. The bulk supplierâs reservoir needs a minimum level of 25% to achieve adequate pumping for the South Hills Tower.
Currently, the bulk supplierâs reservoir is low (around 11%), due to high demand and recovery of the Palmiet system. The same reservoir supplies both the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) and of City of Ekurhuleni (CoE).
The reason why Alexander Park had water this morning and there was pumping at South Hills yesterday, was because the system had an airlock towards Ekurhuleni and as result of that, the reservoir increased the level to 25%. Once the airlock was cleared the reservoir then dropped the level, which is normal.
The system will take a few days to recover as this shutdown was affecting CoJ, CoE and the City of Tshwane. There are a lot of systems in these three metros that were empty and the Kliprivierberg reservoir will start improving as those systems get stabilised.
JW closed the Sandton supply overnight to boost the capacity of the Palmiet system.
There is currently no estimated time of restoration at this stage, however Rand Water and Johannesburg Water teams are working on possible interventions to achieve equitable distribution of available capacity, while managing the demand.

Commando System update
Johannesburg Water continues to monitor the water levels within the system to boost capacity and to ensure adequate supply.
â˘Brixton Reservoir and Tower: The reservoir levels have shown improvement following the overnight intervention, with the outlet now open and providing a regular supply. Poor pressure is anticipated while the system recovers. The outlet will be closed overnight to boost capacity for the next day.
â˘Hursthill 1 and 2 Reservoirs: Hursthill 1 is currently in bypass mode, resulting in poor pressure and no water in the supply zone. Reconfiguration measures are being implemented to boost supply and provide relief to customers. Hursthill 2 remains critically low following overnight interventions. Poor pressure and no water is expected in high lying areas. The outlet will be closed overnight to boost capacity for the next day.
â˘Crosby Reservoir: The levels remain stable but low. The system is supplying fairly but poor pressure may occur in high-lying areas of the supply zone.

Systems update
Update on the second phase of Rand Water’s Palmiet Pump Station maintenance
To ensure an adequate water supply for both the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) and the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE), Rand Water’s Kliprivieversberg reservoir must be maintained at a minimum level of 25% or above. The high demand is impacting the recovery process. Despite some improvements, the reservoir levels remain below the required minimum for the South Hills tower.
The following systems are impacted:
South Hills Tower
The tower remains empty due to no supply.
Midrand systems
Gradual improvements occurred overnight, and majority of systems are supplying fairly.
Grand Central Reservoir and Tower
The reservoir has improved and is currently supplying normally, although the system is still in the process of recovery, intermittent supply may occur. The capacity levels at the Grand Central Tower have improved and the supply is normal, however the tower can be affected by reservoir levels.
Errand 1 and 2 Reservoirs and Tower
Despite low reservoir levels, Errand 1 and 2 is supplying fairly. However, the Errand tower is currently in bypass mode and supplying fairly.
President Park Reservoirs and Tower
The reservoir has improved and supplying fairly, while the Tower is on bypass mode and supplying normally.
Rabie Ridge Reservoir and Tower
The reservoir has improved and is now supplying normally. The Tower is currently on bypass, and residents in high-lying areas of the supply zone may experience a combination of poor pressure to no water.
Sandton systems
Declined due to overnight interventions. All reservoirs, towers, and direct feeds are currently supplying fairly.
Linksfield and Randjieslaagte Reservoirs
Improved overnight and supplying normal, however intermittent supply is expected due to supply and demand imbalances.
Alexander Park Reservoir
As a result of overnight interventions, the system is supplying fairly but poor pressure is expected as the system undergoes recovery. However, intermittent supply may occur due to demand exceeding supply.
The system’s recovery process will be prolonged by a few days as a result of Rand Water’s maintenance affecting CoJ, CoE, and the CoT. The systems in these municipalities were depleted, but are slowly recovering, leading to increased demand from the bulk supplierâs Palmiet system. As the systems in the metros continue to improve, the CoJ systems will also see improvement and stabilization. Progress has been made, and further improvement is anticipated overnight.
There is currently no estimated time of restoration. Nevertheless, the technical teams of Rand Water and Johannesburg Water are diligently working on potential interventions to achieve fair distribution of the available capacity, while also addressing the demand.

Commando System update
Johannesburg Water is actively monitoring the Commando System levels, which are currently low due to poor supply. Necessary measures to improve the supply, ensure fair distribution, and maintain the stability of the system are implemented.
â˘Crosby Reservoir: currently, the capacity level is low, resulting in poor pressure in high lying areas of the supply zone.
â˘The reservoir levels have shown improvement following the overnight closure; however, the system remains constrained. Poor pressure is expected in high lying areas. The Brixton Tower is currently supplying normally but will be affected by reservoir levels.
â˘Hursthill 1 and 2 Reservoirs: Hursthill 1 remains on bypass mode, poor pressure to no water can be expected in the supply zone. Reconfiguration is in place to boost supply and provide relief to customers. Hursthill 2 remains critically low, and slight progress was made overnight, but the system is still constrained, and poor pressure to no water is expected in the supply zone.
Johannesburg Water continues to monitor the recovery of the systems while providing alternative water supply to the affected areas.

Closure of Sandton System to boost constrained systems
While most Sandton Reservoirs are stable and supplying normally, the Illovo Reservoir and Tower have shown improvement and are now supplying fairly. The water supply in Sandton will be closed overnight from 19:00 to 04:00, Sunday, 21 July. This intervention is implemented to boost other Johannesburg Water systems within the Palmiet system that have been affected.
Both the Linbro and Marlboro direct feeds are supplying normally, however, they will be impacted by the overnight closure of the Sandton supply. There will be no water available overnight, with the system expected to gradually recover on Sunday, 21 July 2024.
Overnight, the Sandton reservoirs will experience a combination of poor pressure to no water due to the closure of the Sandton supply. Restoration will occur in the morning with systems gradually returning to normal supply levels.
Johannesburg Water is closely monitoring the progress and restoration of the water supply system from Palmiet and will implement necessary measures as and when needed to assist in the recovery process.
Reservoirs and Towers supplied by Sandton system: Bryanston Reservoir and Tower, Illovo Reservoir and Tower, Linbro Park, Morningside and Marlboro Reservoirs, including Linbro and Marlboro direct feeds.
