Closure of Johannesburg Water sites

The Johannesburg Water Head office and its adjacent office building, Swiss House which houses the mini call centre as well as the Randburg Depot are closed due to positive Covid-19 cases from employees who work in these buildings.

Johannesburg Water is currently in the process of deep-cleaning the sites and tracing direct contacts of the positive cases.

Customers are requested to make use of the COJ 24-hour customer care line on 086 056 2874 to report issues pertaining to water and sewer infrastructure in the interim.

JW will open the closed sites as soon as it is possible and safe to do so.

We urge all residents to be patient as we navigate the challenge posed by the virus together. Johannesburg Water remains committed in delivering services to the residents of the City of Johannesburg.

Recurring pipe bursts in Fourways
19 June 2020

Residents in the Fourways areas are asked to please take note that we are aware of the intermitted water supply problems in the Fourways area, that are caused by recurring pipe bursts on our Asbestos Cement (AC) Pipes that are almost at the end of their useful life.

We have started the process of generating a work request that should get priority and funding through our Planning and Capex programme.

In the meantime we will have a standby team dedicated to the area specifically and will work around the clock to do repairs as the burst pipes occur to limit the duration of the water interruption. Furthermore we will be doing a pipe replacement for atleast 130m of Taretaal street over the weekend. Residents will only be affected during the tie-in process for a few hours.

We urge residents to work together with us and continue to log calls when they see a burst pipe, so that the team can attend to it as quickly as possible.

CAUTION ON WATER QUALITY IN SCHOOLS TANKS AND PIPELINES

South Africa has been on lockdown for more than two months and water quality deteriorates over a period if not utilized frequently.  It is in this spirit that Johannesburg Water would like to advise all School Management Teams across the City of Johannesburg to ensure the following:

  • Water that is in the pipelines has been stagnant for more than two months and is not suitable for consumption without proper purging/flushing prior to use.
  • Schools are advised to flush their taps for a minimum of 5 minutes to remove stagnant water and improve water reticulation and water quality.
  • Schools that are using private water tanks need to refill the tanks with fresh water or treat water before being consumed.
  • Johannesburg Water  will clean and refill water tanks with fresh water to schools that are in our supply this coming weekend

Johannesburg Water conducts an average of 600 tests monthly to ensure the water quality we provide is in line with the South African National Standards (SANS 241), this is not meant to cause panic but should be done as a precautionary measure.

 

Residents are reminded that the City is still under level one water restrictions and we urge all to use water sparingly during this winter period, water and sewer problems can be logged using the bow channels:

MIDRAND MAJOR OUTAGE

Johannesburg Water advises residents of Greater Midrand of the emergency major shutdown from tomorrow night Tuesday 05 May 2020 at 22h00  and will last until Wednesday 06 May 2020 at 19h00. This is a necessary repair that needs to be finalised in order to continue to provide sustainable water service to all. The teams will be repairing a leak on Republic Road and the  shutdown will affect over 40000 house in the following areas:

  • Ivory Park all extensions,
  • Kaalfontein,
  • Ebony Park,
  • President Park,
  • Glen Austin, and
  • Austin View

Residents are encouraged to save water for the duration of the outage, continue to wash hands and minimise the spread of the coronavirus. We appeal to all to use water sparingly and there will be 14 roaming trucks to assist during the outage and we appeal for patience and cooperation.

Mayor Makhubo decries abuse of Permits

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Geoffrey Makhubo, today, 03 April 2020, joined the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) at two road side check operations which were aimed at checking the compliance of Motorists with the regulations pronounced with the National State of Disaster.

These operations which were held across the City is part of an effort to monitor public compliance with the lockdown and related regulations.

During these operations the Mayor found that there are too many cars on the road, which is concerning as most were not complying with the regulations of the lockdown. The road side operations indicated that there is a need to intensify awareness on the lockdown and to enforce the laws.

At least 17 arrests were made as people were not complying and will therefore be charged through the regulations that have been proclaimed by the Minister of Cooperate Governance and Traditional Affairs in line with the Disaster Management Act.

‘We have observed that many people are abusing the use of the permits granted to them, permits are not being used for the necessary essential services meant to be. It is concerning to see many citizens not adhering to the compliance of the Lockdown. There will be no tolerance to those misleading the law enforcement, people who are not complying will be arrested”. Said Mayor Makhubo

“I urge all, and for every single person to stay at home and only go out when they need to perform essential services. This is for their own safety and health, but also to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the country.” Mayor Makhubo

The City of Johannesburg will continue to conduct more roadside check operations over the next 15 days across the City to continue to enforce compliance, and where there is non-compliance, there will be arrests made in accordance with the regulations that have been proclaimed by the Minister or Cooperate Governance and Traditional Affairs in line with the Disaster Management Act.
