Phase three of Rand Water Palmiet Pump Station maintenance is underway

The third phase, and the last of three, of the maintenance at Rand Water’s Palmiet Pump Station began today, Monday 29 July, at 05:00, and is scheduled to end on Tuesday, 30 July 2024 at 21:00.

During this time, pumping will be reduced to 76% for 40 hours, which means that 24% of Palmiet’s pumping capacity will be out of production.

Areas that are fed from the direct feeds, South Hills Tower, Alexander Park Reservoir, as well as the Linksfield Reservoir will be affected immediately when the maintenance begins; while areas that are supplied by the Sandton and Midrand reservoirs and towers will be affected gradually as all the reservoirs’ capacity gets depleted.

The following Johannesburg Water systems will be impacted during the maintenance period: all Sandton and Midrand systems, the South Hills Tower, as well as the Alexandra Park, Randjieslaagte, and Linksfield reservoirs.

Full recovery of the systems will take several days after maintenance has been completed. However, the areas supplied by the Sandton and Midrand reservoirs and towers may take longer to recover because the reservoirs need to first build capacity after being empty.

Johannesburg Water will make arrangements for alternative water supply at strategic points within the residential areas. However, residents are encouraged to store water in preparation for the maintenance.

Systems update

Systems update

Most Johannesburg Water systems are supplying fairly to normal. However, some of JW systems are affected by imbalances between supply and demand.

Alexander Park Reservoir

The reservoir improved after overnight closure but remains low. Poor pressure may occur in certain parts. The outlet will be closed overnight to build capacity for the next day.

Modderhill Reservoir and direct feeds. The reservoir is supplying fairly while direct feeds are affected by poor and to some extent no water.

Midrand systems

Systems are currently constrained due to demand exceeding available supply and Johannesburg Water is putting interventions in place to balance the system and equitably distribute available capacity. The following systems are affected:

Grand Central Reservoir and Tower

The reservoir has improved and supplying normally; however, supply is poor and may affect the reservoir levels. Interventions are in place to boost supply and the Entity is monitoring improvements.

Grand Central Tower

Improved and supplying normally, however may be affected by reservoir’s low levels.

E-Rand 1 and 2 Reservoirs and Tower

E-Rand 1 and 2 reservoirs are low but improving and poor pressure to no water is expected supply in the supply zone. Johannesburg Water is monitoring improvements and putting necessary interventions in place to assist in recovery. The E-Rand tower is on bypass mode and supplying fairly.

President Park Reservoirs and Tower

The reservoir has improved and supplying fairly but affected by high demand. While the Tower is on bypass mode and supplying fairly, but poor pressure may occur due to high demand.

Rabie Ridge Reservoir and Tower

The reservoir has improved and supplying fairly. The Tower is on bypass, and constrained, poor pressure to no water is expected in high-lying areas of the supply zone.

Randburg systems

Currently most Randburg reservoirs are empty due to burst and subsequent repairs. Affected reservoirs are;

Linden1 Reservoir and Tower,

Blairgowrie Reservoir, Linden2 Reservoir, Kensington B Reservoir and Tower.

Deep South

Orange Farm Reservoir

It is supplying fairly but the water levels are decreasing due to high demand. This is attributed to the increased population and illegal connections, which have led to increased demand and ultimately making the system unstable and causing poor supply and no water in some areas. As part of daily interventions, the reservoir outlet is closed overnight and reopened the next morning to build capacity.

Ennerdale Reservoir

The system is supplying fairly but declining due to the high demand exceeding available supply, which makes the system unstable. This is due to the rapid increase of the population and illegal connections. Subsequently, residents in high-lying areas of the supply zone can expect a combination of low water pressure to no water.

Lawley Reservoir

The reservoir is low and declining due to high demand, which is affecting the stability of the system, as such a combination of poor pressure to no water is expected in the supply zone.

Lenasia Systems

All reservoir levels are critically low and a combination of poor pressure to no water is expected. This is also due to high demand, illegal connections, vandalism, and tampering of infrastructure.

Lenasia Systems

All reservoir levels are low and a combination of poor pressure to no water is expected. This is also due to high demand, illegal connections, vandalism, and tampering of infrastructure.

Lenasia Cosmos Reservoir is supplying fairly.

  • Hospital Hill Reservoir levels have improved overnight but declining due to high demand and supplying fairly. Poor pressure to no water may occur in high-lying areas.
  • Lenasia High Level Reservoir is currently at a critically low level, leading a combination of poor pressure to no water in high-lying areas of the supply zone.

Central, Soweto and Sandton systems.

Mostly supplying fairly to normal.

Johannesburg Water is monitoring all systems and preparing for phase three of Rand Water Palmiet Pump Station Maintenance Programme.

Commando System

Johannesburg Water continues to monitor the water levels in the system in order to boost capacity and ensure fair distribution. The system is constrained due to demand exceeding supply.

Crosby Reservoir
The reservoir made slight improvements overnight but remains low and supplying fairly. Poor pressure may occur in high-lying areas of the supply zone.

Hursthill 1 and 2 Reservoirs
Hursthill 1 remains in bypass mode, resulting in poor pressure and to no water in the supply zone. The system has been reconfigured to boost supply and provide relief to customers. Hursthill 2 made slight improvements overnight but remains low, poor pressure to no water is expected high-lying areas. The outlet will be closed overnight to boost capacity for the next day.

Brixton Reservoir and Tower
The reservoir levels have improved and supplying fairly. Poor pressure is expected while the system is recovering. Johannesburg Water is monitoring the decline of the reservoir. As part of interventions the outlet will be closed overnight to boost capacity for the next day. The tower has improved and supplying normally, however, it might be affected by reservoir levels.
